you could start convos in Arabic in the 'Arabic Section', that would be very fruitful.

[ps. corrections to my Arabic most highly welcome]

(Without intending flattery) Maa shaa`allaah your Arabic is of a high level, especially if you can write. I would like to know, on behalf of others, where you learnt and how long it took?

كما يقولون الآخرون
It is better to use singular i.e. yaqool no?

جصوصا
spelling...

أما
immaa?

Have a look at the very knowledgable participants here (http://www.ahlalhdeeth.com/vb/index.php?) for stylistics (probably the best Islamic forum on the net - there are some very senior students of knowledge and scholars there).

I knew the basics, letters, sounds, vowelling etc - not much at all

After the unexhaustable advice on sincerity, the advice that I found most helpful was to start learning Arabic wherever you are... it's not good to delay learning Arabic because you plan to travel abroad sometime... a lot of the time, this doesnt happen and time is wasted.

Also, the more you learn now, the less time you need to spend learning the basics abroad - so you can get much more out of your time studying other important aspects InshaAllaah

Another thing is to not expect a lot when you go abroad (especially if you're coming from the West and you're used to luxuries). It can be quite testing at times when living standards are not upto what you expect... alhamdulillah gives you chance to appreciate many things.

And lastly plan to do something with what you learn. The best thing is to teach what you plan to study - i.e. put the 'ilm back into your community when you return because there are demands that need to be satisfied. It'll also push you to learn the Arabic thoroughly because you'll be responsible for explaining to others thoroughly.

May Allaah facilitate your affair and make you one who assists the Muslims

JazaakAllahu khairan Abu Muqatil, well spotted Masha'Allah

I can't seem to edit my post to correct the mistakes... Mods?

yes, yaqool is better
I meant khusoosan, not jasoosan http://talk.islamicnetwork.com/images/icons/icon11.gif
And I'm not sure about immaa - you're probably right tho

Ahlal Hadeeth forum is tops Masha'Allah, may Allah preserve it

would you recommend egypt? how much did it cost?Yes, I would recommend it especially if you go to institutes suitable for you, maybe try Al-Fajr, Al-Qortoba. Many people from the west go to Egypt because it's relatively easy to reside there.

Living expenses are not a lot in Egypt alhamdulillaah. Ring your Arabic centre and see how much it will cost you (I know Al-Fajr stands at $85 a level and you need to buy the books).

Rent can be anywhere from 500 egyptian pounds to 2,500+ depending on what you want. Bills (electricity and telephone) are extremely cheap Masha'Allaah. Food is also cheap. I would say an individual can live very well on £60 a month - including rent, food etc (excl. Arabic fee)

Wa 'alaikumusalaam wa rahmatullaah

Yeah I sometimes find it difficult without vowelling if the word is new to me. As you learn more you'll find yourself being able to read without a need for the harakaat... you'll see that the word you're reading cannot really exist except with certain vowels, and so you'll pick it up Insha'Allaah

I don't know about Yamen sorry. I have heard some people say that it's quite difficult there when it comes to living conditions - but some people don't mind, so it's up to you really.
Why not visit there and see if it's to your liking... actually I advise that to anyone wanting to study abroad for a while - check it out first and maybe even pre-book apartment.
