I have not seen this before, but it was reccomended for the Arabic curriculum at a local school here. If anyone has used it, give some reviews.

I've studied from it alhamdulillah - it's very very good Mashaa'Allaah.

I have all three books, each better than the other. I'll try to give a brief overview Inshaa'Allaah.

It's very good to kick in your conversational skills - as it has regular discussion points. It's therefore very handy to study it as a class.

All 3 books are very Islamic, with excellent topics like Importance of Arabic in Islam, the istikhlaaf of 'Umar, a bit on the Sciences of the Qur'aan- how it was revealed, Seeking knowledge and Islamic Civilisation etc. It boosts your Islamic knowledge as well as your Arabic, so that's a bonus.

The first book focuses on increasing your vocab and familarising the student with Arabic as a language (speaking, reading, writing and thinking in Arabic). Because the book is in Arabic, it makes you independant of translations from the onset - this was the most beneficial thing for me.

The second book gives you a smooth transition from the previous. Here we see grammer being introduced which I found helpful. Books like Kitaab al-Asaasi and others introduce grammar a bit too soon in my opinion, whereas this one allows you to absorb Arabic for some time before teaching you the grammar.

Also in this book longer text (نص) is introduced. This means dealing with small articles/essays (interesting ones with Islamic input!) - hence vocab increased as well as understanding of prose. This is essential for you to be able to move onto own reading books outside of class etc

Third book really gets you into the language and at the end of this stage the student should be fluent Inshaa'Allaah. It introduces Sarf and Balaagha as well as more text (نصوص) - no more pictures! All grammar rules in Ajroomiyyah will have been covered by end of this book.

There are also listening exercises throughout these books (1, 2 and 3) which help you pick up on your conversational skills and understanding through listening.
Bad point:
It only goes upto 3 books (with many sub-chapters). There's more grammer to cover afterwards, which I guess can be taken from Kitaab Al-Asaasi or specialised books like Sarf at-Tatbeeqi / Nahw Waadhi7 etc

Ok, my post is getting too long I have too much to say I guess.

All in all ukhti, this Arabic series definitely gets my thumbs up http://talk.islamicnetwork.com/images/icons/icon14.gif
I would recommend it for a class, not sure about individual study.

Anything good I've said is from Allaah, anything wrong is from myself and shaytaan.

Wasalaamu 'alaikum wa rahmatullaah

One more point - the many exercises as well as examinations at each stage really help in strengthening what you've learnt from that particular chapter.

If there is an article/conversation on 'School' for example, then it's always followed by questions to test how much you've understood - very good Masha'Allah.

Would this be recommended then as self-study?

May I ask how long it took you to complete it?I haven't completed all of the three books - but I only have half of the last book to go... So far it's taken me just under a year (with breaks in between).

Fajr Centre in Cairo have also switched to using this book in place of Kitab al-Asaasi.Yeah, also I'm sure many others are making the switch or at least doing combinations. I believe this has a lot to do with the fact that 'Arabic at your hands' is much more Islaamic than Kitab Asaasi.

Asalaam alaikum,
Would this be recommended then as self-study?Wa 'alaikumusalaam wa rahmatullaah. I guess if you already know some Arabic, then it shouldn't really be a problem Insha'Allah. The only thing is the books are all in Arabic (no English whatsoever), so you might need a teacher to interpret/translate for you at times. Try looking at the sample pages and see if you understand them.

To be honest akh Abu Talha and whoever else is interested, the audio's are good, but you really need the textbooks to follow through etc, so might be worthwhile to chase after the books while waiting for the cds. I would've donated them, but I really need them right now! Insha'Allaah they should be available very soon in the UK

do you know where I could get them from sis fajr? also sister I believe you mentioned that you studied in egypt? my friend recently came back and he said they interrogated him so bad, i believe they physically hit him, and kept on saying he was a bomber planning to attack egypt.

We were laughing at it cause i know the brother personally his the most simpliest guy in the WORLD, his not practising, he doesnt have a beard, his the most softest person I've ever known.

Do you know people who have been through the same?

Also what do you know of Al Quotaba institute compared to something like al Fajr?

Fajr

I don't know where they can be purchased from in the Uk, but if I find out I'll post it up Insha'Allaah.

Do you know people who have been through the same? Not personally, no. I didn't experience anything like that when I was there alhamdulillaah, but I did hear a brother(s) being paid a visit, and some questioned. I think this may have increased slightly due to 7/7 but it's very rare. Insha'Allaah if you know how to stay cool and not let people intimidate you, then it shouldn't lead to any problems. While studying there, its best to say little (as anything can be misinterpreted), and watch for what you say and to whom - just be normal, carry out your normal routines and stick to your purpose of studying, and Allaah will avert things from your path unless He wills otherwise. I don't think it's common to be stopped, questioned or even visited. There are many students in Egypt who are from the Uk, they can't treat them all the way your friend was unfortunately treated.

Also what do you know of Al Quotaba institute compared to something like al Fajr?I haven't studied at al-Qortoba, but I can relay a few things that students there have told me. Location wise, its not very far from al-Fajr and students do tend to switch their studies from one to the other. I can't really say one centre is better than the other because I might be a bit biased then, since I only studied at al-Fajr and benefitted much alhamdulillaah.

Al-Qortoba is quite flexible with regards to time.
It's ideal for sisters with children/brothers with other comittments etc because they allow you to select your time slots. Al-Fajr however has a set timetable (esp. if studying in a group), like you are expected in class for example 11:15am and you finish at 2:15pm etc.

Study materials do differ between the two though. Al-Qortoba uses Kitaab al-Asaasi as far as I know. Al-Fajr now uses 'Arabiatu bayna yadayk for the first 8 levels and thereafter they transfer to Kitaab al-Asaasi level 9.

Both centres have Tahfeedh al-Qur'aan programs. Al-Fajr recently opened up theirs, takes 4 years to become haafidh there Insha'Allaah. It's very cheap costing around £3 a month, its open to everyone in town. I think al-Qortoba caters for children also in their program. But you will have to phone in to enquire more about their Qur'aan program, as I don't know much sorry

You'll find some students start at one of the 2 centres and then move on to the other as the first wasn't to their satisfaction, so you will have to ask around more to get a more balanced comparison between the two centres.

They are very similar and people often mention them together because they were both established by roughly the same people. (al-fajr was established first, then there was a split and one of the managers established al-Qortoba)

Sorry, wasn't much help but InshaAllaah, it was of some benefit

We ordered about 60 of these book packs for an arabic institiute that was set up here.
The order itself was made through Darusalaam in B'ham, so you may want to chase them up and see if they have any left in stock.
To be honest i cant remember how much it cost me, what i can do is see if there are any of the books still available that were not taken up Insha Allaah.
