It made me laugh when I read it. But I was wondering why he couldnt just say, كم عمرك? That is how I usually ask. Can you think of any smart-guy answers to that [I couldn't]?

But I was wondering why he couldnt just say, كم عمرك?Because that is a question that can only be answered after one's death.

Aah, I see. Good thinking. Jazakumullaahu khairan.

The message it is conveying is that you should be accurate and articulate in your speech, and it gives examples of different ways of asking "How old are you?" in Arabic. As none of them are accurate, except the last, ("How many [years] have passed of your life?") none of them received the desired answer.
To translate it would cause the loss of any humour and value.

قال: ابن كم أنت؟
If that is a way of asking "How old are you?" then it could furnish a very nice, alternative meaning for يا ابن \ بنت الستة والستين ! :)

Assalamu alaikum..
Yeah their mean.. anyway hey yuor right I am on a journey!
My fortune cookie was right! It said,
"You are about to embark on a most delightful journey". And it was right!
Not the cookie.
The fortune was merely a sight from Allah to show me my way to Islam!
Or at least it warned me at first, but I did not really understand what it meant by that,
but I do now, ameen! Thanks Rose15! Alhamdulilah!
Assalamu alaikum wa rahmatullahi,

Assalamua3lykum Warahmatulla:
Ukth al Kareemah sakeenah I just wanted to tell you that in Islaam we dont believe that anyone besides from Allah (swt) knows the knowledge of the unseen nor what it is that the future holds. Since Allah tabaraka wa taa a3la is Aalimul Ghayb (All-Knower of the Unseen) it would in reality be as though setting up partners with Him (far above is He from that) if we were to ever accept anything other than Him (no matter who or what it is) as knowing the unseen.
As you have stated I know you had read the "fortune" cookie before coming into Islaam and nothing serious really however do not let shaytaan make you think that that fortune cookie message (written by some other human being) was true or contained a message of your future for you. Many people read fortune cookies and go to people who read hands etc for "fun". They claim that they do not believe what is being told but do it for "fun". Astagfirullah Azeem...if they only knew the seriousness of doing such they would never even dare THINK about horoscopes, hand reading, etc.
There are many evidences from the Quraan and Sunnah on this matter. I have linked below from Islaam-qa. InshaAllah this will provide further elaboration based upon Quran and Sunnah. Please do read both of the links, they are quite beneficial mashaAllah.

Asides from that my beloved sister we learn something new everyday of our life in Islaam- and that is one amongst the other thousands of beauties of being a Muslim- AlHamdulillah-
Barakallahu Feeki (f)
