[Fajr]

A classic:

تزود من التقوى فإنك لا تدري *** إذا جن ليل هل تعيش إلى الفجـر
فكـم من فتى أمسى وأصبح ضاحكا *** وقد نسجت أكفانه وهو لا يـدري
وكم من صغار يرتجى لهم طول العمر *** وقد أدخلت أجسادهم ظلمة القبـر
وكـم من عروس زينوها لعرسـها *** وقد قبضت أرواحهم ليلـة القـدر
وكـم من صحيح مات من غير علة *** وكم من سقيم عاش حينا من الدهر
فـمن عـاش ألفـا وألفيـن إنـه *** لابـد من يـوم يسـير إلى القبر

Take taqwa as your provision, for you do not know
When the night darkens, will you live until fajr?

For how many of a youth laughs by morning and evening
And his shrouds have been weaved, and he does not know.

And how many of young ones are expected to live long
But their bodies are made to enter the darkness of the grave.

And how many of a bride have they beautified for her husband
And their souls have been seized on the night of decree.

And how many of a healthy one dies without an illness
And how many of an ill one has lived for a good time

So whoever lives for a thousand and more
He must one day, make his way to his grave

The lines appear to be of the baHr (prosodic meter) al-Tawiil. However, the first hemistich (half) of the third line does not seem to conform to its pattern even with all the normal modifications to the baHr. After checking, I found that it should be:
وكم من صغار يرتجى طول عمرهم

Likewise the first hemistich of the last line runs better if the waaw between ألفا and ألفين is replaced with أو or even better بعد . This last option (i.e. بعد )seems to conform perfectly to the baHr.

Anyhow, these are just some of my observations and are obviously open to error.

So as not to detract from the point and force of the qasidah, the message is certainly a very powerful one.

(The tashkeel has been added to the couplets).

Juwairiya, if you wanted that particular poem with tashkeel, here it is:

تَزَوَّدْ مِنَ التَّقْوَى فَإِنَّكَ لا تَدْرِي *** إِذَا جَنَّ لَيْلٌ هَلْ تَعِيْشُ إلى الفَجْـرِ
فَكَـمْ مَنْ فَتىً أَمْسَى وأصْبَحَ ضَاحِكاً *** وقَدْ نُسِجَتْ أَكَفَانُهُ وهُوَ لا يَـدْرِي

I posted this up yesterday morning and by the same evening subhanAllah, I received a call breaking the news that someone we all knew very well had passed away suddenly. Innaa lillaahi wa innaa ilayhi raaji'oon. That morning, I couldn't get certain ayat about death out of mind and also this poem... then came the news!


After checking, I found that it should be:


وكم من صغار يرتجى طول عمرهم


That's interesting, did you deduce that yourself or did you actually find a correction for the poem?
Also, although I'm not too grounded in metres etc when it comes to poetry I think in the last line, the waaw fits it quite well with the rhythm, no?

I'm sorry to hear about the person that passed away. May Allah grant him / her a high and lofty place in Jannah, Aameen. May Allah make us all true wayfarers with our final destination constantly in our minds, so as not be found in a state of ghaflah when the inevitable happens.

Maybe the current maqam (occasion) does not call for a cold analysis or scansion of some of the lines, so I'll defer it until such time it is deemed appropriate.

فِتنة عَظِيمَة

فَسَادٌ كَبِيرٌ عَالِمٌ مُتَهتّكٌ *** و أكبر مِنه جَاهِلٌ مُتَنَسِّكُ
هُما فِتْنَةٌ في العالمِينَ عَظِيمَة *** لِمَنْ بِهِمَا في دِيْنِهِ يَتَمَسَّكُ

A Great Fitnah

A great corruption is an insolent scholar
And worse than him is a devout ignorant
They are two great tribulations in the world
For the one who adheres to them in his Deen

Imaam Ahmad (rahimahullaah) used to say:

إذا مَا خَلَوتَ الدَّهْرَ يومًا فلا تَقُلْ *** خَلوتُ ولكن قُلْ عليَّ رَقِيبُ
ولا تحْسَـبنَّ اللـهَ يَغْفِـل ساعَـةً *** ولا أنّ مَا تخفَي عَليه يَغِيبُ
ألم تر أنّ اليومَ أسْرعُ ذاهِبٍ *** و أنّ غداً للناظِرين قَريبُ

“If you spend a day in solitude, do not say
I spent it in solitude, but say over me is a Watcher

And do not think that Allaah is oblivious for even an moment
or that what you try to hide from Him is unseen

Do you not see that today is leaving fast
And that tomorrow for the onlooker is indeed near?
