“Abū Anas ash-Shāmī”
The Shaykh, the Mujāhid, the Caller, the Man of Actions…
‘Umar Yūsuf Jum’ah Sālih
A Hero Who Was True to His Covenant Under the Banner of Tawhīd…
May Allāh have mercy upon you, my dear brother Abū Anas! And may He safeguard your children whom you left behind, Anas, Mālik, and Maymūnah, just as you safeguarded His Dīn, His Islām, and how you aided His Da’wah, and His Tawhīd…
I knew you since we were small, we used to be in the Masājid of Kuwait, and we grew up together in the Masājid of As-Sālamiyyah… the Masjid of As-Salaf, and Al-Khalaf, and Al-Mud’aj, and Ar-Rūmī… That was where our playing fields were, and that was where we walked together… and the indications of the love for ‘Ilm, and eagerness for it, were apparent in your character since the time we were young… perhaps that is why you left off your high-school studies, and headed towards Al-Madīnah Al-Munawwarah, to study at the Islāmic University, which was our dream as the youth at that time…
And you then began the path of seeking ‘Ilm from the scholars… and Allāh indeed enabled you much, and you were worried lest you were not dedicated enough, even though it was your struggle, your passion, your pursuit, your effort, and your high vision – and thus you surpassed most of your companions…
And just as you surpassed them in seeking ‘Ilm, you surpassed them also in acting upon that ‘Ilm, and translating that knowledge into reality, and calling people to it, and teaching it, and being patient and enduring upon it… And indeed you had a great impact in teaching the Shabāb (youth), and bringing them to seeing ‘Ilm, and making Da’wah to Allāh, and Tarbiyyah, and defending the Dīn of Allāh… thus the Shabāb (youth) and people were attracted to your Durūs, and they loved your style, and they recommended each other to attend your gatherings in the Masājid of Suwaylih, ‘Ammān, Az-Zarqā’, and other places… And you were not safe from the torment of the enemies of Allāh, those who fear the activities and movement of the sincere Callers, and you were accused many times, and they tightened their grasp upon you, and you were imprisoned – but you did not humble yourself to them… The brothers from Bosnia will never forget your Durūs, nor will the founders of The Bukhārī Center, nor The Society for the Book and Sunnah, which was revived due to your activities…
And lastly, the Land of the Two Rivers, where you translated your call, into actions, and you coloured your words, with your blood…
You used to stab the necks the abandoners with the spear of your knowledge, and attacked the doubts of the wretched ones with the sharpness of your tongue…
And you walked, cutting the throats of the mushrikīn with the teeth of your sword, and you ripped the bodies of the puppets and apostates with your weapons…
Let the callers and the scholars who act upon their knowledge be like this! You did not occupy yourself with “he said… she said”… nor did you have a bitter tongue against the sincere callers and the Mujāhidīn, as is the case with many of those who attribute themselves to ‘Ilm and the ‘Ulamā’ in our era today… Rather, your tongue was unleashed against the abandoners and the wretched ones, established upon assisting the Jihād and the Mujāhidīn… And thus, you lived not, except with your spear upon the enemies of the Dīn… I ask Allāh (Most High) to make your abode in the highest paradise…
Nor can I ever forget your deep concern with regards to seeking ‘Ilm and encouraging upon it, for indeed you used to call everyone around you to choose one of the books of knowledge, and to read a chapter from it, while you would read a different chapter – so that you all could meet together in a gathering, and each one would summarize what he read to each other… such was your way with many of the brethren… As for the lessons regarding the Manhaj, indeed they took most of your time, in which you used to teach many congregations from amongst the Shabāb from various regions… not to mention the public meetings and lessons which were attended by men and women in your Masjid in Suwaylih, and in The Bukhārī Center, which you established, and became a lighthouse calling to Allāh…
I visited you at your home many times, and likewise you visited me, and the passion for Jihād was apparent from within your chest, and your yearning for Jihād and martyrdom was manifest very clearly for those who knew you closely after the Mujāhidīn had invaded New York and Washington… You were not a person of much talk and few actions, as is the case with most of the ‘zealous’ in our era today… and that is why many of those who attended just a few of your blessed activities, gatherings, and Durūs - which we used to advice the Shabāb to attend and follow… they all sprung forth in immense numbers from your Masjid, and left to the land of ‘Irāq, in the middle of the humming of bullets and the roaring of machine-guns and explosives… As for me, I did not rush there for reasons, but I did notice the Shabāb heading and migrating there, ever since the invasion of New York and Washington…
And I noticed your intense love of Shaykh Usāmah – may Allāh preserve him – and your serious attempts to join him, and your travel, and your imprisonment in Iran, and your return back to Jordan, after all the paths to Afghanistan were blocked in your face… But even still, you did not stop or loose heart, till you had joined the Mujāhidīn in ‘Irāq as soon as you could… And the last meeting you and I was two years ago, before I was captured, while I was wanted by the enemies of Allāh… when we met in one of the Masājid in which you used to meet with those Bosnian brothers whom you used to teach ‘Ilm, and accompanied them ever since you had gone to Bosnia as a caller and a helper… the meeting was quick, and each one of us was pleased and content with each other, then we departed… and I was captured just a few days afterwards, and I was cut off from any news regarding you, until I was moved months later, from the cells, to the general prison, where I heard of your joining with the Mujāhidīn after the occupation of ‘Irāq… and it is as if your voice is singing (the poem written by the martyred commander of the Mujāhidīn in the Arabian Peninsula, Abū Hājar ‘Abdul-‘Azīz Al-Muqrin, may Allāh have mercy upon him):
The memories of the battles and martyrdom is stirring,
My longing for the Ever-lasting Abode which is remaining;
And the roaring of the Lion of Allāh in the fields, How much,
It pleases my yearning for Jihād openly;
For Allah I have sold my desires,
And I have bought with it, the Highest Gardens;
I do not seek a pleasant, comfortable life,
Nor any amusement in this Abode of Perishing;
Until I reach martyrdom in dignity,
And the beautiful maidens of Paradise are bandaging my wounds;
O Lord! We have sold you our lives, for Gardens,
So in Jihād, O Allāh: spill my blood;
Lord, O Lord! Martyrdom, I seek,
So answer, O Allāh: my prayer.
And indeed you spilt your blood in Jihād, accepting it forwardly, not turning back… And you departed from this world on Friday, the third day from the month of Sha’bān, along with a number of the Brothers of Tawhīd, those who sold their selves, and their souls, to their Lord… and they left in anger, protecting the honour of the Muslim women, and attempting to free them from the prisons of the Americans and their puppets… So their Lord fulfilled their intention, while they were accepting, without turning back…
O Allāh! Make his reward great, and protect his family and children, just as he strove to protect the honour of the Muslim women; and accept his efforts, his Jihād, and raise his status in the Highest Firdaws, him and those who fulfilled their covenant with him, from amongst the Brothers of Tawhīd, just as they raised the Banner of Your Tawhīd… And resurrect us and them together under Your Shade, the day there is no shade, save Your Shade…
And O Allāh! Send salutations and peace upon Your Prophet, Muhammad, and his family, and all his Companions.
