I was just reading one of the threads where a brother said "as-salamullahi 'alaykum".

Isn't that wrong? For a word to be a mudaaf, it has to be without the alif wal lam, right?

yes that is one of the rules for a word to be mudhaaf , it cant have alif laam

He probably meant to say,

Salaamullahi 'alaykum

it works that way.
