‘Umar (radiallaahu ‘anhu) said: Learn Arabic, for indeed, it increases one’s manhood.

الماوردي : المروءة مراعاة الأحوال إلى أن تكون على أفضلها حتى لا يظهر منها قبيح عن قصد ولا يتوجه إليها ذم باستحقاق .اهـ (أدب الدنيا والدين /392) .

A better word would be decency

I'm sure there is something missing in it. I googled it, couldn't find anything.

An ever more accurate meaning would be 'sense of honour'.

But as 'manhood' is one of the meanings of the word, I chose to go with that, for my own reasons.

The saying was quoted in the Introduction to Eedaah al-Muqaddimah al-Ajrumiyyah by Saalih ibn Muhammad ibn Hasan al-Asmuri. The reference given is also from him. Wallaahu a3lam.

"What have you done to us, O Usamah"

What have you done to us, O Usamah?
For everyone is shooting their arrows at us
We have become the targets of reproach, no matter what we do
So what excuse will relieve us of this reproach
For you are fighting the crusading armies
And we are vainly following a dove
And the moment we settled for a humiliating armistice
They broke it and violated the sanctity of our religion
You are leading lions of the desert
And we are imitating the act of the ostrich
Here we sit, crying like women
On account of what is transpiring on our land
Just yesterday, we used to be counted as men
And we very nearly believed that we were (men)
Proudly boasting the length of our moustaches
The harshness of our voices, and how tall we are
Until you came along, and changed the meanings of those words
And every false claimant started changing his words
(The new meanings you gave were) that manhood is both word and deed
And manhood is (this part i lost, will look it up later)
And that manhood is to believe in Allah's oneness
With every form of worship, and steadfastness
And that manhood is love for this deen
Such a deen at the crowning point of which is jihad
And that manhood is abstinence and withdrawal from this world
And from high and noble status
And that manhood is steadfast resoluteness and patience
Against all odds, and difficulty is staying safely at one place
And that manhood is attacking and withdrawal
And victory which we hope Allah to bring to fulfilment
And that manhood is the thawb and the beard
And noor which appears above the whiteness of the turban
So after these deeds, what deeds can there be
And who is there who is able to match your status
So rewrite all the dictionaries and lexicons
Because manhood has a new meaning: manhood IS usamah.


May Allah reward the one who translated this, even though it didn't capture the cadence of the arabic :), ameen.

ماذا فعلت بنا... يا أسامه
فالكل يرمي علينا سهامه

وصرنا نلامُ...ومهما فعلنا
فـبأي عـذر ٍ...نردُ الملامه

فأنتَ تُقاتلُ جيشَ الصليبِ
ونحنُ نُهرولُ..خلفَ الحَمامه

ولمّا ارتضـينا بسـلم ٍمُذل ٍ
بَغوا واستباحوا لديني حرامه

وأنتَ تقـودُ أسـودُ الوَغى
ونحنُ نُقـلـِدُ ....فعلُ النَعامه

قعدنا لنبكيَ...مثلُ النِساءِ
على ما يدورُ بأرض ِالشهامه

وبالأمس ِ.. كنا نُعَـدُ رجالاً
وكدنا نصدقُ ...تلكَ العلامه

فنزهو بطول ِالشوارب منا
وصوت غليظ ٌوعرضٌ وقامه

حتى أتيت فصُغتَ المعاني
فـبدّلَ كـلُ دَعيٌ .. كـلامه

لأنَ الرجولة... قولٌ وفعلٌ
وأن الرجـولة..تعني الكـرامه

وأنَ الرجولة.. توحيدُ ربٍ
بكـل العـبادةِ...ثمَ اسـتقامه

وأنَ الرجولة... حبٌ لدين ٍ
يكـون الجهاد.. بأعلى سنامه

وأنَ الرجولة.. زُهدٌ وتركٌ
لدُنيا... وجَاه ٍ...رفيع مقامه

وأنَ الرجولة.. عزمٌ وصبرٌ
على النازلاتِ وعـسرُ الإقامه

وأنَ الرجولة.... كرٌ... وفرٌ
ونـَصـرٌ منَ اللهِ يُـرجَى تمَامه

وأن الرجولة... ثوبٌ ولحيهْ
ونورٌ يفوقُ... بياضَ العُمامه

فهل بعدَ تلك الفعالِ...ِ فعالٌ
ومن ذا يطالك.. قدراً و هامه

أعيدوا كتابة... كلُ المعاجم ِ
فإن الرجولة... تعني أُسـامه

So the part he missed out, al-kiraamah I think... how would you translate that line?
